WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The woman and her baby, who were at the center of an amber alert yesterday are still in Virginia.
Westfield Police Captain Hipolito Nunez told 22News Cheryl Kozaczek will likely be arraigned in Virginia, then be extradited to Massachusetts.
Kozaczek of Westfield is facing charges for leaving Massachusetts with her baby early Wednesday morning.
She does not have legal custody.
Residents in Western Massachusetts were on alert after police issued an amber alert.
Nunez said they only issue an amber alert in the state they believe the suspect is in.
"You don't want to abuse the system. If you put it out to the entire country and every state does that, you're going to have multiple amber alerts out all the time. You have to have clear cut information to know that someone is in a particular area before you can do that," Capt. Nunez said.
Westfield police called officials in Virginia after they had reason to believe she was there.
That's where Kozaczek was arrested.
The baby is in the care of the Department of Children and Families.
They are making arrangements to bring her back as well.
