The communities in the Pioneer Valley are getting nearly $2 million thanks to the federal stimulus.
And this means more firefighters and cops patrolling the streets to make them safer. But there's no guarantee the money will be here next year.
In an effort to give fire and police departments a much needed shot in the arm, Governor Patrick announced the release of nearly $18 million state-wide to hire, rehire or retain 83 police officers in 35 departments and 105 firefighters in 85 departments.
Local aid cuts, stemming from state budget shortfalls created dangerous situations in cities and towns. But at least for now, that could be changing as public safety jobs are re-filled.
Senator John Kerry said he hopes this means safer communities and lower crime rates.
This is the first round of help for police forces and the second for many fire departments.
In the list of 6 communities in western Massachusetts that are benefiting: Springfield with the most and the Berkshire County town of Adams with the least.
