DEERFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - It was an exciting day for maple syrup lovers in the pioneer valley.
Williams Farm Sugarhouse in Deerfield kicked off its maple sugaring season Friday.
March is Maple Month.
Agricultural Commissioner Scott Soares tapped the first tree.
Owners of the Williams Farm Sugarhouse say made about 50 gallons of syrup so far this season, which is much lower than usual.
Chip Williams says, “We're definitely behind a little bit we'd like to be farther along then that but we get what we get and it's all up to mother nature and the weather just hasn't quite cooperated with us this year.”
Sugaring season is weather dependent.
Nights need to be below freezing and days warmer for the sap to flow.
