GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. (AP) - A misdemeanor charge of operating negligently to endanger against retired television movie critic Gene Shalit has been continued until April 2, when it will be dismissed.

The agreement between police and Shalit's attorney was approved during a probable cause hearing before a clerk magistrate Wednesday in Southern Berkshire District Court.

The 86-year-old Shalit was cited in October after his vehicle struck a utility pole and came to rest against a Lenox house . Shalit, who lives in nearby Stockbridge, was not hurt. He told police he fell asleep.

Shalit's lawyer tells The Berkshire Eagle his client will not drive until April 2, at which time his driving status will be re-assessed. Police described Shalit as remorseful.

Shalit, known for his bushy hair and mustache, reviewed movies for NBC's "Today" show from 1973 until 2010.
