SANDISFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The Berkshire county town of Sandisfield has come of age and celebrated their town's 250th anniversary today in style.
An old fashioned country fair began this week-end long celebration that's been in the planning stages for more than a year and a half.
As the people of Sandisfield looked toward the future, they certainly weren't neglecting a salute to the town history which began in 1762.
Kathleen Jacobs headed the committee that pulled this all together for their grand 250th anniversary celebration.
“Our town is a very, very small town in Western Massachusetts and we've been called the jewel of the Berkshires. We have approximately 800 people in our town and we're a farming community and we enjoy Western Massachusetts,” Jacobs told 22News.
It must be a coincidence that Sandisfield is the third Western Massachusetts town to celebrate its 250th anniversary is one month's time. 22News earlier offered congratulations to the people of Chesterfield in Hampshire county and Athol at the edge of Franklin county.
These festivities at the fairgrounds impressed long time residents of Sandisfield.
“Oh it's just wonderful, everything is just great. The staff, the committee, they did such a wonderful job, they've worked so hard, it means a lot to all of us this town,” said Zoe Nelson of Sandisfield.
The celebration included at cook out at the American Legion Pavilion, and more events have been planned for Sunday. The people of Sandisfield are proud of their town and its longevity. As one man told 22News, you don't celebrate your town's 250th anniversary everyday.
