Some may not have power until Saturday night

NEW MARLBOROUGH, Mass. (WWLP) - Last year's Halloween snow storm  left thousands without power for days. This time, utility companies responded much faster, and more effectively but there are still many who are waiting for their power to be turned back on.

Western Massachusetts Electric Company had about 600 customers without power on Wednesday and estimated all power would be back within 24 hours. However, National Grid customers may have to get by without electricity even longer.

Dominic and Marsha Sarno's home is one of hundreds that were still without power Wednesday in Berkshire County. Their electricity was cut Monday and they've been cut off since then. “I'm not sure exactly what NY looks like now because we don’t' have the TV or the high-speed internet out here so that's another inconvenience,” said Dominic Sarno of New Marlborough.

When the winds came the trees knocked some of these power lines down and while crews put some lines back up, power still had not been restored to their home.

On Wednesday, nearly 1000 customers in Berkshire county were in the same position and it was estimated they won't have power back until Saturday night.

But the Sarnos were prepared. “Taking care of the toilets and stuff so we can fill those up and flush them a few times, I've got four or five gallon jugs of water that I usually prepare for,” said Dominic.

They also had wood for their fire ready to go and flashlights available but losing power is never convenient. “It's the bathing that bothers me the most because you can't jump in the shower but I'm getting pretty good at bathing out of a bucket,” said Marsha Sarno.

Despite having to potentially wait three more days, they were making the most of it. “It's actually kind of fun sitting around by candlelight, things that you don't do that you wish you did other times, it's cool,” said Marsha.

While Massachusetts residents fared better this year, there were still over 6 million homes and businesses without power in the Northeast.
