Bear tracking begins in South Deerfield

SOUTH DEERFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Governor Deval Patrick will be in South Deerfield to begin the annual tracking survey of Black Bears wearing radio collars for tracking purposes.

The University of Massachusetts in Amherst began it's yearly Bear survey 43 years ago when there were just 100 black bears in Massachusetts.

Since then, the bear population has grown to about 3,000.
