The town of Greenfield received a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency to help homeowners make their homes more energy efficient.
The town of Greenfield received $160,000. The EPA grant will help people make updates to their homes so they can save money on energy.
Rick Roy has been living in his home for 14 years. He decided to take advantage of the EPA program last year. First step: a free home energy assessment.
Roy does a lot of work in his basement so he wanted make sure it was properly sealed. He says he's saving money already.
"I'm on a budget plan where I have been paying $140 a month and now I'm paying $75 a month," said Roy.
You can apply for the grant once a year. Most of the costs are paid for through the grant.
Carole Collins of Energy Smart Homes Project Coordinator says the grant pays 75 percent of any upgrades up to that $2,000 threshold. "We're starting this week going to every home in Greenfield to let them know about the programs that are available," said Collins.
It can take a couple weeks to a month for someone to come to your home after you apply. For more information you can call Energy Smart Homes at (413) 772-1389.
