Finding a solution for stray dogs

MONTAGUE, Mass. (WWLP) - 12 Franklin County towns have banded together to solve their common problem, where to house stray dogs.

With the help of a state grant, Franklin County sheriff Christopher Donalen converted an old building into a new Regional Kennel. He said Franklin County towns had a serious stray dog problem.

Animal control officer Ed Grinnell told 22News the regional shelter solves a big problem. “Up until now a couple of vets would have outside kennels, and I have a kennel in my own facility because I work with dogs.”

James Dion of Turners falls said he likely never would have been able to adopt Oscar had it not been for the new regional kennel. “I stopped off to see what they had; I found Oscar and after ten days I could adopt him. So it worked out pretty good for me.”

Since the Regional Kennel opened its cages, it’s been home to 80 dogs, most of them having already been adopted.
