GREENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Springfield, Holyoke, Westfield and Palmer are the four locations in Western Massachusetts vying for a casino .
It could take up to three years to build a casino, which means Massachusetts may not open a casino until 2017.
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission is accepting application fees from interested casino developers. Each casino developer will have to pay a $400,000 application fee to the state.
One resident told 22News where she would like to see a casino in Western Massachusetts.
Penny Ricketts of Greenfield said, “Definitely not Springfield. I feel like there's already too much crime there and too many issues. Westfield would be good for the community; it would be closer to Western Massachusetts and up here. It keeps money in Massachusetts right now; there’s so much money going to Connecticut.”
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission will issue a casino license no later then February of 2014.
