GREENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The covered bridge in Greenfield will likely open sometime this year.

The bridge, which spans the Green River, dropped about six feet and was knocked off its abutments when Tropical Storm Irene blew through Western Massachusetts in 2011.

Greenfield Engineering Superintendent Sara Campbell told 22News design plans to fix it are about 90% done. She says they hope to have the bridge open by the end of summer or early fall, because a lot of people rely on it.

“To have the ability to put cars across it again is critical to people out in that area, because they need to get down this way whether it's coming from Leyden down to the hospital, or basically just back and forth,” Campbell said.

Campbell says that the repairs will be funded mostly by FEMA.
