GREENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Lt. Governor Tim Murray paid a visit to the Valley Steel Stamp Company in Greenfield on Thursday, to promote Governor Patrick’s initiatives in manufacturing.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says that there will be three job openings for every newly-certified precision metalworker over the coming decade. But according to Valley Steel Stamp owner Steve Capshaw, Franklin County is neglected when it comes to funding for the training of qualified entry-level machine operators.
“Right now, we turn away 80% of the work that's offered to our company by our customers because we don't have the number of bodies with the skills we need to integrate that work,” Capshaw said.
He told 22News that $250,000 is being raised by local companies for new equipment for the Franklin County Tech Machine Technology Training Program, and they are trying to get the state to match the rest.
