Nurses, Baystate back in negotiations

If talks fail, one-day strike will be October 5

GREENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The nurses at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield returned to the negotiating table Thursday afternoon, for their 27th meeting in nearly a year.

The nurses are threatening to strike for 24 hours on Friday, October 5 starting at 7:00 a.m. if a deal is not reached by then.

The Massachusetts Nurses Association says they can't agree on overtime pay and sick day policy.

Baystate's Chief Nursing Officer Deborah Palmeri told 22News that they have tweaked their proposal, and they think they're bringing a reasonable deal to the table. She said their proposal is in line with industry standards, but some union nurses disagree.

Palmeri says if the 209 nurses strike next week, patient care will not be impacted.

Legally, with 10 days notice, nurses can refuse to work until a new contract is negotiated.

Both sides hope to avoid that by reaching an agreement soon. Negotiations are scheduled to continue Thursday until 6:30 p.m.
