GREENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Greenfield Police have reopened a section of Federal Street while crews worked to repair a natural gas leak Tuesday night.

Greenfield Fire Captain John Whitney told 22News crews were called to the area of 317 Federal Street just before 6:00 PM Tuesday because of the strong smell of gas.  When firefighters arrived, they opened a manhole in the street where they measured a high amount of gas.

The fire department notified Berkshire Gas who was called in to repair the leak.  A nearby Cumberland Farms and Dominoes Pizza were both evacuated for a brief period of time but they have since reopened.

A Greenfield Police & Fire dispatcher named Sarah told 22News that Berkshire Gas repair crews are fixing what is believed to be a cracked pipe, and that police are allowing traffic to pass on Federal Street.

She told 22News she did not believe there was any danger to people in the area.
