GREENFIELD, Mass. - In its first full month of operation, Greenfield's new solar farm generated enough electricity to power close to 300 homes. The city estimates it will save about $250,000.00 each year. It's a ten year agreement and that could add up to more than $2 million worth of savings.
The new solar farm covers 15 acres, and is built on Greenfield's old landfill. The amount of power produced at the solar farm in July eliminated the release of harmful greenhouse gases. The city's DPW Director, Sandra Sheilds, told 22News it is enough energy to power up to 400 cars.
"To date this facility has generated enough power to power our town hall our fire station our library all of our decorative street lighting and traffic signals for a whole year," she said.
Shields says more than half of the town's electrical needs will be supplied by this new solar farm. The second proposed solar farm will be near Millbrook Well Field.
