The end of Twinkies: Hostess shutting down

GREENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - You can say goodbye to Twinkies, Ho-Ho's and Wonder Bread: Hostess Brands is going out of business.

The privately-owned Texas-based company plans to shut down operations and lay-off all of its 18,000 plus workers.

The company says a nationwide worker strike hindered its ability to make and deliver its products.

Hostess had warned employees that it would file a motion in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, which would allow it to unwind its business and sell assets if things didn't return to normal by last night.

Many people told 22News they're sad to see this iconic American brand go, but it doesn't make a difference to them in the end.

“I don't think many people are going to miss it. I don’t eat it. You don't really see that name everywhere nowadays,” Kate Halkett of Greenfield said. “I think people are moving on from that brand of junk food.”

For those who love the sweet treats, though, there could be some good news. Hostess CEO Greg Rayburn says there has been some interest expressed in purchasing some of the company’s 30 brands.

Hostess Brands filed for Chapter 11 protection back in January, marking its second trip through bankruptcy court in less than a decade.
