GREENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The virtual doors on Greenfield's Virtual Academy won't necessarily close this June after all.

Wendell parent Dorie Fisk told 22News that the Greenfield School Committee Thursday night voted to ask the state to take over the school that 450 K-8th graders attend online.

The Massachusetts Virtual Academy in Greenfield is the first of its kind in the state which has expressed interest in opening several more virtual schools.

A change in state law shifted oversight of virtual schools from local districts to the state, which is why the Greenfield School District decided to close it.

Fisk told 22News she was confident the virtual academy would reopen next school year under the supervision of the state.
