SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Sixteen-year-old Kevin Gomez was shot and killed outside of 729 Belmont Avenue Saturday night.
Springfield Police Captain Peter Dillon told 22News Gomez was shot in the back and later died at Baystate Medical Center.
A group of teens were at a sweet sixteen party around the time of the shooting.
Springfield police are still investigating the killing.
A memorial is now up on Belmont Avenue for Gomez.
Neighbors say they are shocked and saddened by the death of someone so young.
John English told 22News, “It's really young, but people need to stop the violence.”
“It's a tragedy,” Steve Thomas said who lives up the street, “I have a 15 year old daughter myself who will be turning 16 soon but for a 15 year old child to die it is tragic.”
Gomez turned 16 just two weeks ago.
This is now the fifth homicide of 2011.
