200 Springfield TD Bank employees out of a job

Springfield customer call center closing this year

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Two hundred western Massachusetts TD Bank employees will be out of a job when the customer call center closes later this year in Springfield. Those two-hundred employees learned the news Tuesday night in a meeting that lasted about 90 minutes at the Sheraton Springfield.

Bank spokesman Jimmy Hernandez told 22News TD Bank made a very difficult decision to consolidate their call centers to three locations in Maine, New Jersey and  South Carolina. The 24/7 Springfield center at 1441 Main Street will close in December. The regional bank branches in that Main Street building will remain open. This decision comes after TD Bank acquired South Financial Group, which had branches in Florida and the Carolinas. That acquisition provided them with a large office campus in Greenville which Hernandez says will support their continued growth. Many of the TD Bank employees leaving the meeting were visibly upset, but were not allowed to comment.

Over the next few months, TD Bank will host on-site job fairs at the Springfield center. Employees are also eligible for 40 vacant positions at TD Banks throughout the area. Employees who do not find alternative plans by December will be offered severance packages.

Hernandez says the decision was not made lightly, and is not a reflection of those employees' performances. He says TD Bank remains committed to the 152 banking centers in Massachusetts, 18 of which are located in Hampden county.
