SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Cold weather often puts the freeze on blood donations. That's why 22News partnered up with the American Red Cross for a blood drive Thursday, to help replenish the supply.

Every two seconds, somebody in the U.S. is in need of blood.

"Sometimes it's small children that have a blood anemia or leukemia, and they need that blood to help them stay alive; folks who are maybe in a car accident, a trauma situation", said Jecoliah Ellis, Red Cross spokesperson.

Your pint of blood can go a long way. Donating blood is easy. It doesn't take that long and it's virtually painless; and once you're done, you have the satisfaction of knowing that you've helped save up to at least three lives.

"I think our lives are too short and we have to help each other every [chance] we get....I feel pretty good doing that", said Inna Kazalis of Springfield.

But blood donations are almost always down during the cold, winter months--which is why your help is crucial right now.

"We do need all types, but right now there's actually an urgent need for O-negative--which is the universal blood type. The emergencies rooms need to have enough O-negative on the shelves for emergencies", said Ana Parrelli, Red Cross Recruitment Manager.

Here are the requirements if you'd like to donate:

  • Donors should be at least 17 years-old (however 16 years-olds can donate with parental consent).
  • Must weigh at least 110 pounds.
  • Must be in good health.

To find a blood drive in your area you can visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED-CROSS.
