SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Springfield’s Union Station project has received a $650,000 boost.

On Wednesday morning, Mayor Domenic Sarno, Congressman Richard Neal, and other officials announced the latest grant funding for the project, which will turn the long-closed train station into a regional transportation center.

This latest grant money comes from MassDevelopment, under the Brownfields Redevelopment Fund ; a program set-up to encourage the redevelopment of industrial and commercial properties on sites where there is (or is perceived to be) environmental contamination.

To date, $1,022,800 has been provided for extensive environmental investigations and remediation at Union Station.

The historic property on Frank B. Murray Street has been vacant since the station’s closure in 1973. The redevelopment plan would have Union Station serve as a hub for bus, train, and other transportation services.
