SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The AIDS Foundation of Western Massachusetts held the annual AIDS Walk and 5K run Saturday at Forest Park in Springfield.

The foundation helps families affected by HIV and AIDS.

One runner told 22News, he hopes events like this will teach young people the importance of being aware.

Donald Beach says, “Young people today are less aware of some of the things that have happened and the amount of people passed before, and I think we need to keep that awareness up so that we don't continue to have the cycle going. “

All the money raised will go toward educational programs and emergency financial assistance for those who cannot afford medical treatments.

22News meteorologist Nick Bannin emceed this year's event.
