Americans frustrated by fiscal cliff deadline

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Will they come to an agreement?

That's what millions of Americans wonder as uncertainty hangs over the state of the nation.

President Obama said on Friday the economy can't afford a politically self-inflicted wound.

Economists warn that a stalemate could trigger a recession with taxes increased and spending slashed.

Obama is urging Congress to reach a deal, even a preliminary one that will avoid middle class tax increases.

Dave Marcy told 22News, “There is no confidence in Congress, that's an oxymoron.  We deal with it, we'll keep on forking out the taxes and they'll keep spending more. “

As we mark off another day in December the deadline looms and as we begin to run out of hours people's patience begins to run out as well.

Despite the frustration, even the President was modestly optimistic that leaders would be able to come to an agreement and some think a deal will be made but damage has already been done.

A bipartisan bargain is in the works and Senators could vote on a plan as early as Sunday, just two days before the fiscal cliff deadline.
