SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Springfield Police have identified David Acevedo III, 24, of Springfield as the city's first homicide victim of 2011.
Springfield Police Sergeant John Delaney told 22News that Acevedo was shot in the back shortly after Noon at the corner of Riverton Road and Denver Street in the city’s Pine Point section. He died about half an hour later after being taken to Baystate Medical Center by ambulance.
"The city’s first murder victim so far this year had been in a heated argument with several other men when someone shot him in the back,” Sgt. Delaney said. He indicated that drugs could have been a reason for the shooting. No arrests have yet been made, but Delaney added that detectives are following-up some good leads. Delaney told 22News that detectives are working into the evening and early morning hours to follow-up on those leads.
According to Delaney, Acevedo has a "history" with the Springfield Police Department.
