SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Dozens of people shivered during the early morning cold.
They had no choice but to wait until it was safe go back to their apartments at 149 Sumner Avenue in Springfield's Forest Park neighborhood.
Firefighters had to evacuate all 40 apartments in the high rise building.
Dennis Leger, the aide to the fire commissioner, told 22News a cat reportedly knocked over a candle in one of the apartments.
The man living there is now without a place to live.
His neighbors remained out in the cold until firefighters were certain the fire hadn't spread beyond that one apartment.
