CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - It was a lesson in Polish history and culture Sunday at the Polish Center of Discovery and Learning, at Elms College.

People of all ages came to the center to see an exhibit about the Katyn Massacre of 1940.

The exhibit also features different events connected to polish culture such as book readings and lectures.

22News talked with a local Polish paratrooper, from World War II, who came to observe the exhibit, but ended up getting a piece of history that he lost, returned to him.

“I want to thank the gentleman for the beret that he gave me, because I lost my original beret and this was the kind used by Polish paratroopers in WWII,” said Chester Cholewa of Holyoke.

Christopher Petronis, a polish military expert said, “The Polish contributed to world freedom, in WWII, because they had the 4th largest allied manpower contingency in the war effort, but not many people know that.”

The exhibit will be open through April 21st.
