Fiscal cliff deadline fast approaching

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - With less then five days left, the country is still hoping for a deal on the fiscal cliff.

But Congress came back from vacation pointing fingers, and bickering despite all that's at stake.

If they don't meet deadline, 2-million Americans will lose their jobless benefits and Uncle Sam will be taking 2-percent extra out of millions of working-class families' take home pay.

Many say this can all be avoided if Congress just puts their differences aside.

Joan Tabachnick says, “I think we do need a miracle, but they also need to be at the table talking. I'm very disappointed they're not talking. We do need to have some resolution here. I think it's really possible. “

And it is still possible.

The goal is still to get a deal done before midnight on Monday.

But lawmakers are expecting some kind of deal after deadline when Congress takes over on January 3rd.
