SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Jury selection begins Monday for one of three man accused of burning down a predominantly black church in Springfield, hours after President Barack Obama was elected.
Michael Jacques pleaded not guilty to destroying Springfield's Macedonia Church of God in Christ Church in 2008. Two other men, Thomas Gleason and Benjamin Haskell were also charged in the case, but they have pleaded guilty.
Jacques tried unsuccessfully to have a confession thrown out before his trial.
In addition to the arson charge, Jacques has also been charged with conspiracy against civil rights.
The church has since begun reconstruction at the targeted site on Tinkham Road.
