SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - 23-year-old Darin Negron has died after being shot on Melrose Street in the city's Old Hill section Thursday night.

Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney told 22News the shooting happened at 96 Melrose St. around 11 P.M. Delaney says that though police found him with a gunshot wound to the back of the head, Negron was talking with police and was not cooperative. He says that after EMT's arrived, he had tried several times to push himself off the stretcher. It was later discovered that he had been shot several times. He was rushed to surgery but died around 1:30 A.M. Friday.

Detectives are still looking into the circumstances of the shooting, but Sgt. Delaney said the victim was the intended target and this may have been the tragic result of an ongoing feud. Negron had a history of drugs and violence, Delaney said.

There have been no arrests, but detectives have been working all morning following up on leads.
