SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Springfield Police say that the victim of a deadly weekend shooting has ties to a local gang.
Police Sergeant John Delaney told 22News that Raul Vera, 38, formerly of Springfield, was killed after being shot in the upper back.
Delaney says that just before 7:15 Sunday night, police found an unresponsive Vera near 66 Lincoln Street. He was taken to Baystate Medical Center, but had died by 7:40.
Police have been on the lookout for three Hispanic men who were seen in a silver Dodge Neon. Detectives have been working on the case around the clock, following leads and talking to witnesses.
According to Delaney, Vera has a long police record. He was released from prison just three months ago, and had been arrested for breaking and entering in May. Delaney says that Vera had ties to a Springfield gang.
Vera is Springfield’s ninth murder victim of 2011.
