HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - Hundreds of family, friends and strangers braved the heat, to participate in the 1st annual Jonathan "Jonno" Gray 5k race at Ashley Reservoir Saturday.

Jonno was a 2011 Holyoke graduate and a UMASS freshman athlete who suddenly died of cardiac arrest at the age of 18.

Three local youths who best represent Jonathan's qualities and character will each be awarded a $2,500 scholarship.

Jonathan's mother, Cynthia Gray says, “It's bittersweet and heart warming to see this town and the people in it remember Jonathan's legacy. “

All the money raised in Saturday's race will benefit The Chad Foundation and Scholarship Fund.
