SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - It's a landmark that's been around for more than 100 years.
The first Summit House was built in 1821 and the rehabilitation of this old house is taking longer than expected.
Department of Conservation resources spokeswoman S. J. Port told 22News they've dealt with substantial construction challenges; one of them was finding a new contractor.
Skinner Park hikers told 22News they miss visiting the Summit House at the end of the trail.
Isabella Veillette says, “I do make it to the summit house frequently I enjoy the views from it and scenery it's a very valuable resource to our community it's nice to encourage people outdoors and be active. “
Restoring the structural core of the Summit House, as well as the road leading up to it will cost the state almost a million dollars.
Port says they plan to open the Summit House in October.
