SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - If you're curious how much the security for Basketball Hall of Fame enshrinement events cost the city, taxpayers will be happy to know they got quite a bargain.
Springfield Police Department spokesman John Delaney told 22News, of the $15,000 cost for security, the cost to taxpayers was just $670, which came out of the Police Department's overtime budget.
The National Basketball Association, the Basketball Hall of Fame, and Nike wrote the checks for the rest.
According to Delaney, NBA security also paid to hire plainclothes Springfield policemen to protect the NBA commissioner and his wife, and several of the basketball luminaries including Larry Bird.
