DUI-related crashes increase around New Year's

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - One holiday has ended, while another is about to begin.

Western Massachusetts is preparing to ring in the new year; one of the most dangerous times to drive.

According to national statistics, on average 12,000 Americans die every year in DUI-related accidents.

Beginning Wednesday, 22News is joining-up with a national ad campaign called Project Roadblock, which encourages you not to drink and drive during the holidays.

If you do find yourself not able to get behind the wheel safely this new years eve, Yellow Cab in Springfield in participating in Dial-A-Ride for the 32nd year.

They will pick you up most places in the Pioneer Valley as long as you have a valid drivers license. Just call (413) 739-9999.

Local and state police say they're aware of the danger this week. That's why they will be stepping up patrols across the area. State police have been holding sobriety checkpoints, so if you're planning on drinking, be sure that you don't also plan on driving.
