SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - More Americans are spending money, but it may not be money they can afford to spend.
The Federal Reserve says consumer borrowing rose by 17 point 1 billion dollars in May. A lot of it went straight on their credit card. There was $8 billion dollars of new credit card debt in May.
It's the most money Americans have put on their plastic in a single month since November 2007. Many people said it's easy to swipe a credit card because they're not handing over cold hard cash.
“I've got a son who just spends money. It's plastic, but then the bills come and you have to pay them. Think twice before you buy something. Just don't do buy it off the top of your head,” Carol Pepe told 22News.
Analysts said, even though borrowing increased, overall credit card use was still well below where it was before the Recession began in December of 2007.
