HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - Four individuals and one four legged friend were honored Friday night for their commitment to animals and the community.
The Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society hosted their annual Humane Awards at the Wyckoff Country Club in Holyoke.
A very special award, the Dakin Animal Hero Award, was presented to Dakota, the first and only accelerant detecting dog with Springfield's Arson and Bomb Squad.
Dakota was recognized for his help in solving the Macedonia Church Fire. He recently retired after 12 years of service.
Dakota's handler, Kent Friberg, told 22News, "he was with me all the time at the station, everyday and night he rode with me. He rode in the car every day. I put 38 years on the fire department and 13 or 14 with him so it was a good career and we decided to retire together."
22News Storm Team Meteorologist Brian Lapis served as emcee for Friday night's awards ceremonies.
