SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Thomas Gleason, one of the three men charged in connection with setting fire to the Macedonia Church of God in Christ, will spend the next three years in jail.
At federal court in Springfield Wednesday afternoon, Gleason received a 54-month sentence. He has already served 18 months in jail, which will go toward his sentence.
Gleason pleaded guilty in June of 2010 after being charged with violation of civil rights, intentional damage of religious property, and use of fire to commit a federal felony.
The judge said that Gleason received a lighter sentence than Benjamin Haskell and Michael Jacques, because of his cooperation with law enforcement. Haskell, like Gleason, pleaded guilty, but received a nine-year sentence. Jacques has maintained his innocence, but was found guilty by a jury and sentenced to 14 years.
Several of Gleason’s family members were in court for his sentencing, but no one from the Macedonia Church of God in Christ was present in the courtroom.
