SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Catholics around the world and here in Western Massachusetts are marking Ash Wednesday.

At St. Michael's Cathedral in Springfield, Catholics received the traditional marking of ashes on their forehead during the noon mass.

“It is a powerful reminder and very vivid reminder that life is temporary,” said Mark Dupont, spokesman for the Diocese of Springfield. “That we all invest a lot into our earthly being but it is a temporary existence.”

For Christians, the Lenten period culminates with Easter on Sunday, March 31st.
