Black Friday special for adopting cats at DPVHS

Hundreds waited in line to adopt animals

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Black Friday is known for long lines outside malls and big box retail stores, but in Springfield on Friday, there were hundreds of people lined up outside an animal shelter for a totally different kind of bargain.

The huge crowd of animal lovers waited their turn to adopt a cat for $5 instead of the usual $95 for a neutered or spayed, vaccinated and micro-chipped animal.

Richard Recoulle of Holyoke had been among the first in line.

“The cats that we had were special to us, but this is more special,” Recoulle said. “It means more because you're adopting the cat.”

Candy Lash of the Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society told 22News that she never imagined there would be this many people coming to adopt a cat.

“Warms our hearts, because the people are here to do something really good- to open their hearts and help an animal in need,” Lash said.
