BOSTON (WWLP) - Could the next Pope be right here in Massachusetts?
Boston Cardinal Sean O'Malley is getting a lot of buzz in Rome as a possible contender.
A growing number of commentators have mentioned O'Malley's cleanup of the archdiocese's sex-abuse scandal.
Springfield Diocese Spokesman Mark Dupont said he thinks O'Malley would be well-deserving and it's an honor his name is even mentioned.
“That said I think I'll leave it to what he has said that he bought a round trip ticket so he fully expects to be back in the Boston Archdiocese by Easter but it does make for some intrigue and interest,” Dupont told 22News.
Dupont said it is hard to predict who will be the next Pope because it's not a political process, it's a spiritual one.
