Bus, walk and bike: MassDOT mode shift

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Ever been stuck in traffic because of congestion?  The Massachusetts Department of Transportation says if we don't change our ways, highway congestion is only going to get worse.  

22News reveals what the MassDOT is asking us to do and if it's realistic.  

Asking people in Western Massachusetts to ride their bicycle to work in the winter or get people who normally drive, to take the bus may not be realistic.  

The MassDOT announced it's mode shift goal.  It wants us to triple the amount we travel by using bikes, public transit or walking.  MassDOT Secretary and CEO Richard Davey told 22News backups like the one we had on the Mass Pike Friday will continue if we don't change our thinking about travelling.  He says it is a cost effective and healthy alternative.  

"Whether it's reducing our greenhouse gas emissions as a society that pollute our air to walk and bicycling,
I could always lose a few pounds myself", says Davey.  

Davey says the state isn't going to build any more super highways.  This is also part of Governor Patrick's Clean energy and climate plan.
