SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Several homes and businesses in Springfield's Forest Park neighborhood were evacuated late Wednesday morning due to the smell of natural gas in the area.

Alessandro Morales told 22News that he and other workers along Orange Street called 9-1-1 after they picked up the smell of gas.

Firefighters and gas company workers arrived, and police blocked off part of Orange Street near the intersection of Revere Street. Nearby homes and businesses were also evacuated.

The street was re-opened by 11:30, and residents were allowed to return home. Columbia Gas workers are still there investigating.
