CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Halloween can be a scary time for dentists who fret over sugar and their patients' teeth, but there is a program that many are partaking in that not only cuts down on cavities, but helps our troops at the same time.

Many dentists have been involved with the “ Halloween Candy Buy Back” program, which encourages children to bring in their sweet treats in exchange for cash or coupons. Dentists then send the candy they collect off to "Operation Gratitude,” a group that puts treats in care packages for U-S troops serving overseas.

Church Street Dental in Chicopee is one of the local offices that's involved with this worthy cause.

“I mean you want to give back to the troops, I mean, those poor guys,” said Dr. Walter Gazda of Church Street Dental. “They do everything for us. We can give a little candy, as long as we don't get cavities.”

But the troops are also sent a toothbrush along with their candy. This year, Dr. Gazda is offering $5 cash for a jack-o-lantern that's full of candy.
