SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Massachusetts is celebrating an entire week of going "car-free".

Starting Monday, residents are encouraged to leave their cars at home and take either public transportation, ride a bike, walk, or carpool to their destinations.

This week's initiative supports the "Global Warming Solutions Act" which was signed into law by Governor Patrick in 2008. It requires a 25% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions below 1990 levels, by the year 2020. It's also the first-step toward a required 80% reduction by 2050.

Those who take "car-free" modes of transportation this year will also be able to earn discounts and incentives from local businesses through the MassDOT's  free rewards program, "NuRide".

The transportation sector generates more than one-third of the total greenhouse gas emissions produced here in Massachusetts.
