SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Casino company Ameristar has announced that they have closed on the $16 million purchase of the 41-acre Westinghouse site in East Springfield, where they hope to develop a resort casino.

Ameristar made the announcement in a news release sent Wednesday morning. The former industrial site on Page Boulevard was purchased from an affiliate of the O’Connell Development Group, Inc. The property, located right off Interstate 291, has been largely vacant since Westinghouse ended their manufacturing operations there in 1970.

The proposed Springfield site is one of several under consideration in western Massachusetts, including sites in Holyoke, Palmer, and Brimfield. An independent gaming commission will select which site in the western Massachusetts region will be home to one of the state’s three casinos.
