W. SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - We're getting our first look in the daylight of the area where a large fire burned on Riverdale Street in West Springfield on Monday night.

Two garage bays at Red's Auto Repair and Towing were engulfed in flames. No people were injured, but their office cat did die after breathing in too much smoke. The owner was able to save all office computers and customer files.

West Springfield Fire Chief William Flaherty told 22News it was burning fuel that made the fire difficult to put out.

“They had a thousand gallons of fuel oil burning in there. We put water on there, but it wouldn't put the fire out. We had to call a foam trailer in from Longmeadow Fire to smother the fire,” said Chief Flaherty.

The State Fire Marshal was there Tuesday morning looking into what caused the fire. Despite the damage, Red's Towing remains fully operational for towing; none of their accounts are affected.
