SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The family of shooting victim Charlene Mitchell is happy to say that she is recovering every day.

Erica Kyles, Mitchell's cousin, told 22News on Friday that Charlene is still in the hospital, but is conscious and communicating with family.

She was heavily sedated in the days following the June 4 shooting that left her wounded and Springfield Police Officer Kevin Ambrose dead.

Police say Mitchell's ex-boyfriend, Shawn Bryan , shot Mitchell and Officer Ambrose before killing himself at an apartment on Lawton Street.

Despite her continuing recovery, Kyles says that it is likely to be several weeks before Mitchell is well enough to go home.
