Chicopee standoff suspect Carlos Gonzalez-Laguer killed by self-inflicted wound

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Autopsy results show the suspect in last Friday's shootout with police in Chicopee committed suicide.

According to a preliminary report from the Hampden County District Attorney's Office , 41-year old Carlos Gonzalez-Laguer died from a single, self-inflicted gun shot wound to the head.

He also suffered additional gunshot injures to his abdomen and arm that appeared to have been from police bullets, but that part of the investigation is not complete.

The report also revealed that a bystander was shot in the leg during the standoff. That woman was treated and released from the hospital.

The preliminary ballistics analysis reveal Laguer fired a total of 64 rounds from a rifle, and three rounds from a .45 caliber handgun.

According to the report, the incident was first reported by several callers at about 7:45 a.m. as a home invasion at 102 West Street, with several shots being fired. The woman who lived in the first-floor apartment of the multi-family home was Laguer's estranged girlfriend, and she had restraining order issued against him back in November.

According to the DA's office, on Friday morning, Laguer texted the apartment resident, which went against the court order. He came to her home, as she was getting ready for work and her eight year-old son was getting ready for school.

Before he could get inside, he ran into a man who lived in the apartment above the woman who had the restraining order. Laguer tried to get the neighbor to help him get into the woman's apartment, but he refused. Then, the report says, Laguer pulled a gun on the man, pointing it at his chest, and pulling the trigger. The gun didn't go off, and the neighbor backed away.

Laguer was carrying two handguns, the neighbor noticed. Laguer also had an assault rifle which he had left behind the house before encountering the neighbor. He used one of his handguns to break through his estranged girlfriend's window. She began yelling, and her neighbor, who was still nearby, yelled for her to run.

It was then that the report says he started shooting, firing at her and her neighbor as they tried to run away. Concerned for her life and the life of her child, who was still inside, she called 9-1-1.

Laguer ordered the boy to return to his room, and then started shooting at the arriving police, as well as scared people on the busy street outside. Two police officers returned fire.

As Lauger fired, two of his shots wounded Trooper John Vasquez , as well as a 41 year-old Springfield woman who was wounded in her left thigh. Her car, as well as several other vehicles and buildings were struck by gunfire during the shootout.

The child had been in the apartment's kitchen safe the entire time, and he ran out of the home when the shooting stopped.

Police later entered the home to discover Laguer inside, dead, with a gunshot wound to the head.

The weapons found inside the apartment included an Olympic Arms Assault Rifle (AR-15 style). It is a semi-automatic that can fire very rapidly from a clip that holds 30 rounds. They also found a .45 caliber Ruger semi-automatic handgun, and a Smith & Wesson .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun, which was jammed. Police found numerous rounds of ammunition, as well.

"Laguer had 206 rounds of ammunition available to him in addition to the ammunition loaded into each weapon found at the scene," the statement says.
