EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) - This is a very special time for the thousands of Asian-American families here in western Massachusetts.

Monday began the 15 day observance of the Chinese New Year. It's the year of the Dragon which occurs on the Asian calendar every 12 years.

Mike Chang, the co-owner of Tao's Restaurant in East Longmeadow told 22News, the Chinese New Year is a celebration that brings families together. "All the families get together, we actually have a big festival. and we actually take in the older, the elderly, we also take care of the young."

Chang estimates that perhaps 10,000 Asian-American families in western Massachusetts celebrate the Chinese New Year, the year of the Dragon.
