SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A man attacked a basketball coach in the Holy Name School Gymnasium after his children's team lost.

Springfield Police Lt. Robert Moynihan told 22News, man started punching the coach of the winning youth team in the Catholic Youth Organization finals and then bit off part of his ear .

Springfield Diocese Spokesman Mark Dupont explained these teams were not affiliated with Holy Name or the Diocese.

Many parents told 22News they were shocked and angry to hear the kids witnessed this.

George Vigneault of Springfield told 22News, “It's a shame that that has to happen because it's a terrible thing to teach children.

Springfield Police Captain William Collins told 22News an arrest hasn't been made yet but the detectives now know the identity of the person they're looking for.

His name hasn't been released yet.

Lt. Moynihan recommends anyone who can help detectives find the attacker to text a tip or call the detectives at 787-6355.
